Concrete-steel composite structures

Structural steelwork is typically used to form the 'design' frame of a building or other constructed asset, typically consisting of vertical pillars and horizontal beams which are bolted, riveted, or welded together during a rectilinear grid.

Steel beams are horizontal architectural features that resist loads connected laterally to their axis. For more information, see the kinds of the beam.

Steel columns are upright architectural parts that transfer compressive pressures. For more information, see the kinds of columns.


This network of beams and columns can then be used to help the building’s floors, cladding, roof, walls, and so on.

Steel frame construction is often utilized within the high-rise, residential Multi story buildings, warehouses, industrial, and so on. Its advantages include:

  • High strength.

  • Relatively low weight.

  • Ability to span large distances.

  • Ease of installation.

  • Off-site fabrication, allowing high quality.

  • Availability of an honest range of ready-made structural sections.

  • Mass production of repeating units.

  • Ability to maintain dynamic forces like earthquakes and wind.

  • Adaptability to any quiet shape.

  • Ability to be clad with an honest kind of materials.

  • Suitability to an honest range of joining methods.



Types of steel frame construction include:

Conventional steel fabrication: steel components are fabricated off-site, move to the proper lengths, and welded together.

Bolted steel: steel elements are manufactured off-site and bolted in place on-site.


Light gauge steel: almost like timber frame construction, with light gauge steel members instead of timber studs.

A concrete frame could also be a standard kind of structure, comprising a network of columns and connecting beams that form the structural ‘skeleton’ of a building. This framework of columns and beams is typically constructed on a concrete foundation and is used to maintain the building’s floors, cladding, roof, walls, and so on.

Beams are the horizontal load-bearing elements of the frame. They're classified as either:

Main beams: providing floor and consequent beam loads to the columns, or secondary beams: transmitting floor loads to most beams.



Columns are the vertical sections of the frame and are the building’s primary load-bearing element. They give the beam loads right down to the foundations.

The elements which can be used as walls for concrete frame buildings are many, including heavyweight masonry benefits (brick, block-work, stone), and lightweight options (drywall, timber). Similarly, any quiet cladding material is usually won't clad concrete frame structures.

Since concrete has limited lastingness, it usually must be strengthened. Csmanltd, also associated with supporting steel (or reinforcing steel), maybe a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used to strengthen and hold the concrete in pressure. To strengthen the position of the connection with the concrete, the surface of the rebar is typically patterned.
